CFIT, Controlled Flight Into Terrain, is one of the deadliest and most frequent General Aviation accident causes. According to the FAA, during a typical year there are around 40 CFIT accidents, about half of which are fatal. During the seminar, we will review a CFIT accident and its cause. We will also discuss scenarios that are related to and causal of CFIT accidents including: VFR into IMC; Loss of Situational Awareness; Wire Strikes; IFR procedural mistakes; "Hot-Dogging" and Unrealistic Aircraft Performance Expectation. We will also discuss how new technology in the cockpit is helping to reduce CFIT accidents and what else we can do to reduce the incidents of CFIT. We will also talk about recent FAA studies that deal with pilot management of automated aircraft systems. As the General Aviation fleet equips with advanced technology, those studies have identified over reliance on automation as an emerging causal factor in accidents and incidents.
